You know, you wouldn’t need a bed step if the damn load height weren’t 3 frickin’ feet off the ground.

(I remember when trucks’ bed floor heights  were around 30" or less...)

I honestly thought they would bring that out. They even registered a patent

Too bad. Still, I’m impressed. I wonder if any of this will make it’s way to the low trim work trucks. On the one hand it seems like that’s where this could potentially be the most useful. On the other hand.... More moving parts. More things to break. And it looks like compatibility with ladder racks/camper tops may not be great

Ford: *makes a sensible, if not excessive product*

GM/FCA: *mocks ford for making excessive product*

GM: *Makes CFRP beds/ stupid tailgate*

FCA: *makes a weird overcompensating tailgate*

We’ve gone too far and there’s no coming back. Perhaps the upcoming Focus based small truck might help

But specifically a functional toy, like a leatherman.

Manually operated? No buttons? No electronics to worry about (except the camera) ? 2000 lb capacity (vs Gm’s 375 lb li mit)? Shut up and take my...

Eh, I dunno, man. $995 is still pretty steep. I a m digging this a lot more that the “MultiPro” gate though.

Better than the stupid GMC design, but still, is this really necessary ? Guess it’s good for older people, but how much are they really using the bed?

It will be interesting to see if Ford has any special tailgate when they update the F-150 this summer. I mean they started this tailgate shit with the Lincoln Blackwood in the early 00's.

The GM one is not intuitive to use and has electric buttons and motors. The RAM one seems like a better execution and easier to use. But both seem necessary now only because of ever increasing bed loading heights.

Remember the 2WD Toyota truck? Back when the open tailgate was level with your knee? Pepperidge farm remembers .

VW Caddys can be very low. No need for a step with these.

You know, something like this integrated into the one true wagon opening (the split gate) would be something of a holy grail. It solves the “its hard to reach in past the tailgate” complaints but still provides tailgate life. if you could latch the upper portion of the splitgate to the body and not the lower gate you would even have a very handy optional position of running with the tailgate open/down but still able to haul long things without obscuring the CHM SL. I know I’ve done  this more than a few times, but I just ratchet strap the upper hatch shut.

I mean, a Transit is as low as 27.8" load floor height (for the US-market RWD vans - a European-market FWD van is like 4" lower IIRC) - that shows that it could be done if an automaker wanted to make a full-size RWD/4WD pickup with a reasonable bed height.
